A local Army veteran and his wife purchased a home in Burnsville, MN for their growing family. Soon after moving into the home, their children began feeling sick, and they noticed a strong musty smell in their basement. They quickly realized that the home inspector missed a critical, and life threatening problem in the home: black mold.
The family had to move out and completely gut the basement. Then, they had to hire experts to do mold remediation throughout the entire home because the problem had spread. Besides the costs associated with this, the family had to take on additional costs to rent a town home while their home was being worked on so that they weren’t exposed to the mold.
Once the mold had been removed from the Burnsville home, the family contacted Complete Basement Systems to find a solution to prevent this problem from ever happening again.
Solution
Mold needs three things to grow:
- Relative humidity over 60%
- Organic material (lumber, sheet rock, fiberglass insulation, etc.)
- Mold spores
With this knowledge in mind, System Design Specialist Dylan Woitas worked with the homeowners to design a system that would ensure that they could live safely and comfortably in their home for years to come.
First, the system included a full perimeter waterproofing system that will work to ensure that moisture is never introduced to the basement environment. In addition, a moisture barrier was installed along the walls of the basement, which not only prevents moisture from entering the home, but also acts as insulation and framing so that the basement can easily be refinished. The entire system was built with inorganic materials, which means that there is no food source for mold spores to grow.
Now that the system has been installed, the family can refinish their basement and move back into their home with confidence, knowing that it is a safe, healthy environment to raise their three young children.
